Today, June 14, is Flag Day, an observance commemorating the adoption of Our Flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Flag Day officially was established as a National Holiday on Aug. 3, 1949. June 14 also is the celebrated birthday of the US Army.
Actually, the week of June 14 is National Flag Week, which means Sunday, June 11 through Saturday, June 17, is Flag Week. This is a time to fly and honor Our Flag in celebration of the flag itself and everything it represents.
As with many of our patriotic observances, Flag Day and Flag Week have become just another opportunity to take a day off, enjoy the warm late spring weather and do almost anything but observe the symbolism the holiday honors.
So please, take time to honor Our Flag, the Stars and Stripes, and perhaps even use YouTube to play a version of the Star-Spangled Banner in observance of Old Glory, forever may she wave.
